This lecture aims to outline a possible distinction between usefulness and functionality. Something may not be useful, and yet be functional. It is precisely the case of art. How is that so? What is the functionality of art? It will be suggested an approximation between art and make-believe. Children explore the surrounding world by making-believe. Adults can explore it as well through the experience of art. The lecture will focus on cinema and how interpreting films is an active exercise of abilities present in everyday life.
Nykolas Friedrich Von Peters Correia Motta is finalizing his PhD in Philosophy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), in the area of ontology of photography and film; Master’s and Bachelor of Philosophy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He has been commenting movies for over 10 years at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul cinema (Sala Redenção).
