Hi @cizi31 Thanks for the proposal – I think we need to wait until we have the Regional DAO or regional communities issue sorted out with NEAR Foundation before we can consider funding this initiative. We have already told all regional funding requests we need to hold until further notice. We are hoping for some resolution to the situation in the next few weeks.
As you may have heard, there’s a lot of work grassroots work taking place to create a bette framework to fund Regional Communities. Up until the eventual setup of the Regional DAO, Marketing DAO is able to resume funding for Regional Communities. However, I would like to jump on a call to discuss how the NEAR Turkey strategy can be revised to be aligned with the new Regional funding approach.
Full context - Marketing DAO paused funding for Regional Communities as we acknowledged that Content and Communities are different and ought each ought to have custom guidelines to ensure we are aligned with Strategic Goals.
The key question is - what are the key hallmarks of a thriving local community? what is the difference between a social media account named after a region and any other social media account pushing out similar content?
This is not a criticism on the current work or seeking to diminish the value of amplifying information in local language. Rather, it is an invitation to think what else we can do to turbo charge as many local communities around the world.
Some of the things we’d like to see more of:
Partnership with University Research and/or Innovation programs. NF call for partnerships with Accelerators serves as a useful guide on how these relationships may look like, just note that there can be a ‘grassroots tier’ where NEAR Turkey engages these organisations directly rather than through NF
Engagement with Student Blockchain clubs and societies. This could involve Meetups, mini-hackathons, etc. Anything that increases the level of awareness and grows the base of passionate NEAR contributors and builders.
Engagement with wider Web3 ecosystem - how can we get more people attending more Web3 events that are knowledgeable, confident and able to introduce people to NEAR?
Host Meetups (aim for existing developer communities - Rust Dev meetups, javascript, even AI, etc.)
The North Start would 2023 should be to host a NEAR Hacker House in Turkey. Let’s map out what would have to be true for that to happen and I will personally work with the team to ensure we can unlock resources and support along the way to get there.
I’m willing to support the current proposal after we’ve had a call and aligned on the strategy going forward. Let’s find a time:
Many thanks for jumping on a call straight away. Very reassuring to meet with a long term, committed community leader and to learn more about what you are doing.
I support this proposal noting that:
The current proposal only covers Social Media and Content Creation. This means that it does fall within the existing scope of the Marketing DAO;
Important to note that, as Original Content Creation, this proposal would’ve likely been funded regardless of the name of the account;
This means that for ‘NEAR Turkey’ (as a brand, name) to ‘grow’ into a Regional Community the expectations have changed, raising the bar significantly to include more activities such as Meetups, Hackathon, local partnerships, etc. in line with the new guideline which eventually will be the realm of Regional DAO
We’ve put out a call to action to NT team to come up with a long term proposal on how this Regional Activation and Strategy may look like. We will then encourage the team to submit smaller, milestone based proposal to ensure that growth can be achieved.
Marketing DAO is willing and able to fund these interim Regional DAO proposal until the setup of the RD has been finalised. This will be done in active consultation with the RD Working Group.
Hi @cizi31 – thanks for your patience with our review of this proposal. I agree with @satojandro on his reasoning for supporting this. As a community, we have seen a huge delay with funding regional activations this year, and I think there is a need for the community to be supported right now more than ever. Your proposal falls within our scope, so I am happy to support this. Note that we may have a different approach/guidelines to funding regional activities soon as the NDC and others involved in the future of the ecosystem build out a way forward for regional growth. Moving this to approved.
