TITLE: The Figurine
In the western part of Nigeria, Osun state precisely at a National youth service corps (NYSC) were posted three friends named Femi a serious student born to a sculptor, Mona the girl that Femi is in love with but could not profuse his love to her and Sola the son to a wealthy man who is a Casanova and feels he can get away with anything but currently dating Mona and known to Femi. After university completion, the custom in Nigeria is to serve their father land after every four or five years course in the university.
The tragedy begin when they were all posted to the same village called Aromire in Osun state for their youth service. The first to get to the camp was Femi the serious and brilliant student who uses glasses due to eye defect, not quite long Mona arrived the camp and met Femi. Mona was so happy to have met Femi, but the love Femi has for Mona could not be expressed because he knew Mona was in love with Sola his friend who is a Casanova. Femi knew how Sola use to maltreat Mona but he was not happy with the situation because no matter their issues, Mona will always run back to the alms of Sola after all the maltreatment.
This is the perfect opportunity for me to profuse my love to Mona, Femi said in his mind. He knew Sola could not have been posted to that same camp because the camp gate have been closed and he believe he must have been posted to another state for his youth service and this made Femi very excited.
At the camp, Femi sat down at a berbicue spot while trying to have a nice time with Mona and also to use the opportunity to profuse his love to her. Unknown to them Sola had bribed his way through the security men at the camp gate and was allowed into the camp that same night Femi was trying to profuse his love to Mona. While Mona was quietly listening to what Femi was about to say, Sola appeared from no where and Femi was disappointed because he feels all his plans had been forfeited again.
The moment Sola got there as usual Mona ran to him and hugged him but Femi had no choice but to great Sola in pretence but down inside of him he was unhappy and he said he would do everything have Mona to himself. Sola on the other hand, is a chained smoker while Femi is Asthmatic so anytime Sola smokes it disturbs Femi but both of them are very good friends except for the fact that, they are in love with the same girl but unknown to Sola and Mona herself.
The morning ritual came at the camp that every student has to engage in a long distance endurance walk around the aromire village, while the were having their road walk via juggling, they got tired and decided to rest under a tree. Before they knew it, the rain began and they saw a shade afar of and decide to go into one of the hut but unknown to them that it was an abandoned shrine in the forest, belonging to a deserted village. The shrine had been abandoned for ages.The two friends decided to scout around to see what they can lay their hands on, on their quest they found a mystical sculpture in the abandoned shrine. They started contemplating on what to do with the sculpture and then Femi who is the Son of a Sculptor knows the value of any ancient sculptural work and it’s worth. We can sell this you know said Femi to Sola, so they decides to take the artwork home.
Unknown to them, the sculpture is from the goddess ‘Araromire’ which bestows seven years of good luck on anyone who encounters it, and after the seven years have expired, seven years of bad luck follows. The village is called Aromire and they have a deity known as Araromire.
Araromire unknown to them is a deity in form of a sculpture that brings seven years of good luck and seven years of bad luck to whosoever held or have it in his custody. The moment Femi touched the deity, he immediately discovered that his sight was clearer and all his eye defect issues had gone also he noticed he was not having asthma again even when his friend Sola light his cigarette as usual to warm himself up after the down pour. At that moment, Femi knew there was something to the sculpture and was determined never to let it go. They then decide to take it to Lagos and sell it in one of the museum. Femi knew once the sculpture is sold all his health issues would be back. Femi then pretended to be sick in the youth camp, so that he could go home and ask his father to do exactly the same sculpture so that he can be in possession of the original Araromire sculpture. Unknown to Sola, Femi took the original Araromire deity home and his father made plenty of it for him, unknown to the father that Femi had alterior motives. After the youth services was over, unknown to Sola that Femi had exchange the original sculpture with the one made by his father. They took the fake sculpture to the museum and it was concluded there that it was fake and not Original, so Femi decided to leave it with Sola and he used it as an artifact in his house unknown to him that Femi had possession of the Original deity. Like the deity does for its custodian, she bestows 7 years of good luck and seven years of bad luck to them. The deity bestowed Femi with 7 years of good luck as he won scholarship to study abroad after their youth services and he started working for an oil company, Sola on the other hand got a good job and then settles down and get married to Mona because he also had an encounter with the sculpture.
Before Femi left for oversea, he lost his father and then told his sister to go and leave with Sola and Mona since they have gotten married. After six years and ten months, Femi came back a wealthy man and decides to pay his friends back with how he robbed him of the woman he loved. He then called his sister living with Sola and Mona, narrated all to her and convinced her to succumb to his plans and told her to poison the children of his friends Sola. The sister did as she was told as this made Sola and Mona very sad. Femi then told his friend Sola that could it be the presence of the sculpture in his home that is causing this havoc, since it was gotten from the shrine, he further made him realise that ever since they both encountered the sculpture his health challenges had disappeared and he is no longer using his glasses again. He further convinced him that,at the museum, the professor told them that Araromire bestows seven years of good luck after which seven years of bad luck follow and it’s almost seven years now. He told Shola that it is obvious as he can see that they are both wealthy within the space of seven years. While they were having the conversation, Mona was eavesdropping. Immediately, she took the sculpture and burn it to ashes but unknown to herself and her husband that it was a fake. don’t forget that Femi’s father made several of the sculpture before he died thinking he wants to go and sell it abroad not knowing he wanted to use it for his own terrible agender. Immediate Mona burned down the sculpture, Fermi’s sister staying with them who was ready to carryout his brothers evil deed replace it with another one. The moment Sola and Mona got to the living room, they noticed the sculpture that Mona burnt to ashes is back on the shelf and this really got them scared that truly their Ordeal must be from the goddess Araromire Sculpture. Immediately Sola took the deity with boldness again and throw it into the ocean, before he could come back Femi’s sister had replace it with another one then Mona started blaming her husband for all their losses and that was the beginning of problems which inturn made Mona to always turn to Femi for comfort most times Sola is not around.
Unknown to Mona, Sola has been having secret affair s with his friends sister and this also made Femi have it in mind to get rid of Femi ones and for all so he could have Mona to himself. He then told his sister to make sure she gets down with Femi so that Mona would get tired of her husband.
One afternoon, Mona came back and saw her husband making love with Femi’s sister on their matrimonial bed, then she became more furious that she was going to kill her husband and Femi’s sister.At that point,Mona could not hold all the calamity befallen her, she ran to a safe and tool a pistol. Before she could pull the trigger, her husband rushed to her and held her hand then Bisi then hit Mona with a bottle and then she fainted and became unconscious.Sola then asked her why she did that, then she said she came to retaliate all Mona did to her brother. She explained that it was her brother that loves Mona and not Sola, she also narrated that she was the one that killed their children just to pay back how Sola had been molesting her while he claims he loves his wife and also making love to her outside his marriage. she also said she was the one replacing the Araromire fake deity back each time they destroy the one in their house.Sola could not bear all he was hearing. as then felt betrayed by his own friend Femi. Immediately he grabbed Bisi and strangled her to death. While all that was going on Mona was regaining conscious but was too weak to get up, then Femi came in and took the gun and also said he planned all this the whole time. He told Sola he had in possession the original Araromire deity and that why everything became so good for him and also how he planted his sister to cause havoc in their home so as to have his revenge. Before he could finish Sola started struggling with him the gun. Now Mona had regained her conscious and then she saw a lifeless body and the two best friends fighting, what will I do she exclaimed? Before she could say a word all that went up in the room was a gun shot and Mona went down immediately because she was mistakenly hit by the stray bullet. Sola rushed to meet her but before he knew it Femi brought out the original figurine and hit it on his head continuously until Shola passed away. Immediately, Femi noticed that his Asthma is back and all his eye defect are back, then he knew the seven years of favour is over and now is the seven year of bad luck had begun. Femi look around and notices that he was empty, he then called the cops and took the pistol put it in his mouth and pulled the trigger and also died.
