An update on the NEAR wallet transition

The Foundation wants to acknowledge that its recent update on the wallet transition has created more questions than it answered. Its intent was to communicate quickly and transparently, but now understands a thoughtful approach was needed.

As such, here’s a response to some of the questions it has received.

What does Pagoda support for wallet look like?
At the moment, this is still being discussed. The Pagoda team is in discussion with the team behind MyNearWallet to devise a program here to help with end-user issues. There will be an update as soon as a decision has been made.

Which wallet should be used for Dapp development?
Whenever possible, developers should use the Wallet Selector. This will be a single point of integration between wallets and the ecosystem of dapps. By choosing this option, it gives developers control of which wallets to display, and allows users to select their preferred wallet, giving them more choice over how to interact with NEAR.

What happened to Kikimora Labs?
Kikimora Labs has ceased all operations due to a funding shortfall. The MyNEARWallet assets and domain have been transferred back to Pagoda so it can foster its maintenance and support in the short-term.

What will happen to wallet.near.org ?
The intent is still to update the wallet.near.org landing page to be the end-user centric wallet portal, providing users with the ability to learn about wallets, filter through the ecosystem of wallets by features, and select a wallet they would like to use. It is still the Foundation and Pagoda’s intent to to support a wallet-neutral ecosystem and to foster the growth of ecosystem wallets.

What happens next?
The future of both NEAR wallet and MyNEARWallet is still under consideration. Leaders from the Founder’s Office, NEAR Foundation, Pagoda, and the Wallet Builders community are discussing and planning the next important steps.

All groups appreciate your patience during this unexpected turn and encourage you to follow this space for more information forthcoming.
