MARMA J CON 2023_ Media Report.pdf (1.5 MB)

Overview:

From Jan. 7-12, 2023, the Marma J Events DAO led the organization of MARMA J CON, an in-person conference and hackathon held in Antigua & Barbuda with virtual programming in the Metaverse (NEAR Hub). The event aimed to connect hackers, web3 newcomers, and NEAR native personalities to hack for the social good and to promote NEAR and its platforms. The main target audience for the event was local students who are studying computer science or some other STEM subject, are crypto-curious or crypto-familiar, while the secondary target audience was Web2 professionals interested in blockchain technology.

While web3 tech is very new to the Caribbean, Antigua & Barbuda in particular has instituted very friendly regulation so the environment seemed primed for NEAR Protocol-focused blockchain education and developer onboarding through our conference sessions and hackathon challenges. In fact, participation in the Hackathon was such a main focus of the event and the students were so keen to continue to engage that we’ve kept the remaining Hackathon challenges (excepting the one hosted by the Environmental Awareness Group) open and rolling until further notice.

Considering we were informed of the successful outcome of our proposal to the Marketing DAO three days into our event, we needed to make several revisions to our content and social media plans as originally envisioned. Before this notification, we had carried forward with the promotion we could accomplish within our means through December and the beginning of January. A number of pre-promotion items therefore were not followed especially with regards to the paid social media campaign because we had no guarantee of funds and comments on our proposal were skewing unfavourable. We are still of course ultimately grateful and appreciative that our proposal was voted through, but we do ask the Marketing DAO council members and the wider Community to bear this in mind as they review the below report.

Additionally, given the feedback from council members and a clear interest in the production of more evergreen content, we have instituted revisions for an additional, sub-MARMA J CON campaign to make up the difference with our original proposal. This content is still related to the MARMA J CON event and in line with the Marma J Ecosystem’s core mission around utilizing web3 tech for social good, and allows us to deploy funds thoughtfully and still in the spirit of our original proposal. See the ‘To Be Completed’ section below for further details.

New content creation elements included in this report that has already been completed:

  • Creation of a recap video posted on YouTube - recap videos are great for a compilation of stand-out snippets from the event in order to help convey to the Marketing DAO Council and the NF Events team what took place on the ground

  • Social Good NFTs content creation - a campaign will be built based on the main theme of MARMA J CON (and the Marma J ecosystem core mandate of working toward/for social good) to fundraise for our main local charitable partners (Dogs and Cats of Antigua, Friends of the Care, Environmental Awareness Group of Antigua); designs for these NFTs were needed in order to take the momentum of the event to begin fundraising efforts
