(Larry Lang) My Immersion Experience as a NEAR Moderator

Hello everybody^^

So I’m Larry, a fellow NEAR Degen who has been working on trial as a Community Moderator.

Not gonna lie before all of this my activities around the topic of crypto are not much, mostly just holding the bag as an investor. But as later on, I got more chances to contribute via the NEAR Degen and now via the Immersion, I get to learn more about near, talk with more people and find myself developing every day, and I am grateful to be given this opportunity

  1. Over the past week, here’s what I do as a community mod:
  • Warn other pp about scammer: I have stickers made specifically for that (which I stole from Vikash=))) so sending the message was not a big problem

  • Report Scammers on the Telegram chat: I just tag @Kv9990 or Raptor whenever I see a scammer, pp shilling unrelated projects or NFSW content and they do the banning

  • Interacting with Reddit post: IDK if this count but I also commenting and answering questions in the NEAR Reddit forum under the name u/hh2049, just gotta list it here for some extra credit^^

  • Redirected users that required technical support to the NEAR DEV channel, and price discussion to the Merchant of NEAR/ NEAR Lunar Force channel

  • Interacting and discussing NEAR-related issues with other members ie when Coinbase, how to apply for NEAR grants, has a16z stop being NEAR backers,… or smt like Aurora IDO, Debio IDO, Ref. finance, etc… but not too much since they have other channels for that

  • Share content that is related to NEAR(kind of shilling me since I am a Degen not gonna lie=000)

  1. Over a week working as a Mod, here is what I have learned and also a few tricks that I have under my sleeve:
  • Try to keep the conversation in the chat: What I’m trying to do is to keep the conversation publicly so that:pp with the same problem can see it for themself, and other admins/moderators could help u out if u don’t know the answer( I’m just a
community member, there’re a lot of things that I don’t know, and trying to learn about it)

  • Utilize the Zendesk FAQ as much as possible: not gonna lie the Zendesk have covered like 70% of FAQ on the chat, what u do it’s just remembering what the question is and where to find it, here’s the link if u want to try: FAQs – NEAR

  • Be as polite as possible: over this one week I have developed a strange habit of always ending my text with a “sir/madam” I think it makes others feel more comfortable

  • And also pay more attention to other projects as well: u could join their telegrams, u could follow their tweet: if u new to the program u should join in other channels as well, the reason is to:

+To know where to refer pp when they asked questions related to one particular
    project

+To answer those questions as well: I can answer about half of the common
questions related to aurora IDO, and most of the time I answered since I think other
mod got their burden as well, and if we know the answer well we should answer it

  1. Now for the things that I have not mastered, but will try my best to improve had I get the chance to go further:
  • How to measure the quality of my work: not gonna lie every day I come to this job trying my best helping, talking, guiding other pp but after one week I still haven’t learned how to judge if my work is good or not? in what criteria can I make that judgment?

  • To learn more about not just NEAR, but other ecosystems as well: The reason why I do this is to make a valid argument for comparing NEAR with other projects- I faced questions like “what the difference between NEAR and Casper?” " can u tell me how NEAR better than avalanche" or stuff like that and honestly I can not make a good enough point to convince them

  • To have a stronger knowledge related to tech: So I came from an economical university, zero knowledge on how back-end front-end work, and it’s hard for me to check the tx explorer searching for errors, but I’m been experimenting with my wallet to find out the pattern, it’s a little bit dumb but it’s the only way for me so far =000

Special thanks to Vikash @Kv9990 and Raptor @KriptoRaptor, who has been amazing at their job and guiding/answering my questions as well, for the last few days they have become mentor/co-worker to me and I admire them a lot

Another shout out to @jcatnear who has given me a chance to try out as a moderator,

Plus all other old and new members like @Benz_Near or @Squazher ( Ayo Emmanuel), @Jeromemrys,… for discussing with me on the moderator chat, it helps me to better know about what’s going on and keep me updated as well^^

Again, thank all of u for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to contributing to the NEAR Ecosystem ^^
