[INTRO] Sacred Waters DAO

Hola Creatives

We are happy to announce the creation of the Sacred Waters DAO to support the effort to change the new route of the Mayan train.

We want to save the most important freshwater source in the Yucatan peninsula by creating awareness through creative means.

Regen Tulum – a decentralized movement to regenerate Tulum – is supporting a group of artists, scientists, engineers, speleologists, divers, and environmentalists to organize themselves in the Sacred Waters DAO. The DAO’s objective is to direct creative responses that make people in Mexico and around the world aware of the dire situation by the re-routing of the Tren Maya megaproject on top of the largest underground river system in the world.

The Tren Maya project threatens to irreparably damage the ancient sacred caves and cenotes in the Riviera Maya between Cancun and Tulum. The geography in the Riviera Maya on the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico weaves together a network of caves, cenotes, and underground rivers. This stunningly beautiful and other worldly wonder of the world was created by a meteor, and is sacred to the Mayan people. The President of Mexico’s Tren Maya project aims to connect to the world of the Maya stretching from the Yucatan down south to Chiapas. Initially the train was going to be along the highway from Cancun to Tulum, but the hotels balked and now they have re-routed it 5 km into the jungle and over the cenotes.

This not only destroys jungle habitat, flora, and fauna but it also stresses the cenote and caves. If there was a major collapse, it could impact the only freshwater on the peninsula and have dire consequences for the people who depend on it.

Mission: Empowering regenerative creatives to create awareness of the urgent need to change the route of the train to back to the highway where it is less damaging to the environment

Vision: All artists, environmental organizations, scientists, divers, and concerned citizens who love Quintana Roo realize that by coming together as a community, we have the power to reverse the damage that’s been done to our environment.

The Sacred Waters DAO aims to incubate creative projects by individuals and groups that generate art, content, flyers, events, performances, videos, virtual reality, underwater photography, music, NFTs, documentaries, and poetry.
