The Maria Clara gown, also known as the Filipiniana dress or traje de mestiza, is a traditional Filipino dress worn by women. It’s an aristocratic take on the baro’t saya. It is named after Mara Clara, the mestiza protagonist of Filipino nationalist José Rizal’s 1887 novel Noli Me Tángere. It is traditionally made of pia, the same material that is used to make the barong tagalog.
For my entry on this week 1 art contest, I used the women of Batak Tribe in the Philippines as reference. Unlike any other tribe here in Philippines that has their own style of tribal clothes, I think Batak tribe don’t have any certain style. You could see some, or if not all of them, wearing nothing aside from the skirt. Their trademark seems to be like having a lot of necklaces and bracelets as they often make this things on their free times. What made me feel happy about this tribe is the respect of men to the women despite being almost naked.
I see the women of the Batak Tribe as a representation of a women power.
