About The Game:
World of Rogues is a post-apocalyptic social MMORPG where players get to socialize, gather resources, craft, quest with friends and fight monsters. The game is free to play, but players can also use their NFT avatars to gather resources, craft their armor and weapons, and go fighting and questing on their own or with their friends.

The game’s Season 2 is currently live and open to anyone with a NEAR wallet 24/7, with special areas open 3 x times a day. Land ownership, additional NFT avatars, areas and mechanics will be coming to the game in 2024.

What is the USP ( unique selling point) of your game?
The non-cookie cutter approach of the creative product team, the game and artistic innovation is what makes us stand out from the rest.

We know that gamers are looking to play a fun game together with friends, and make new friends, too. While social gaming is growing at a higher rate than gaming in general, there’s also a demand for quality games that engage the player base and make them have fun while utilizing ownership of assets. A game that tackles the above successfully will make big waves in the gaming industry.

World of Rogues solves the following by creating a radically social and fun gaming experience where gamers come to stay. An expansive in-game world, and a well-thought out game design by a founder with 1.4m downloads previously ensure a high quality product and a sustainable economy. With smooth onboarding and free-to-play mechanics, the game is designed to attract the traditional web2 players, as well as cater for the existing web3 player base.

  • Increasing transactions on NEAR through utilisation of on-chain assets

What is your Tech Stack?
World of Rogues is built on top of the Unity game engine. Since Unity can build for many different platforms, this gives us the flexibility to expand to other platforms in the future. The game is currently browser-focused as this enables us to iterate quickly and build the game along with our community using lean principles.

Rogues is also a 2D focused game enabling a small team to create many more assets than would be possible in a 3D game. The 2D in-game animations utilise Unity’s 2D skeletal rigging pipeline to enable a wide variety of characters to share animations but swap out body parts dependent on traits derived from the character NFTs.

The multiplayer aspects of the game are initially on Photon, since this is an industry standard but may move to the new Unity multiplayer solution as that matures.

Have you applied for any other funding programs so far?
For current marketing of the existing season of the game, we have not currently applied for other funding programs. We have an ongoing grant programme for mobile development of the game from NF. Rogues Studio has successfully completed previous grant programmes, from NF & Human Guild, for initial launch on NEAR and initial game development.

NEAR integration

Will the game be NEAR exclusive or is it planned to integrate other chains or a web2 version?
Both Near and Polygon integrated with the web version; currency majority of players are on NEAR. With this marketing campaign, we’ll be promoting the creation of new NEAR wallets and new players on NEAR only. Future mobile development of the game will be NEAR only.

UPDATE:
Grant has been Paused / Stopped by Gaming DAO, due to their requirement of an additional in-game contract to be created in addition to Rogues’ NFT contract.

This requirement was not flagged prior to this grant’s approval.

Rogues’s implementation and usage of NEAR Protocol, including but not limited to game mechanics, smart contracts, logins, NFTs, have always been in the public domain. World of Rogues has been streamed almost daily on Twitch any anyone can see how the game works, should have they wanted to research it.

Rogues is also launching on mobile exclusively on NEAR in 2024, as well as launching a full in-game contract for all in-game economy and items. The launch will bring hundreds of thousands of players to NEAR as it will be attracting players first audience without financial incentives.

Rogues has completed the 1st milestone of this grant, but will not be requesting payment for it, and will cover the cost itself as a sign of good will, and the professional attitude that Rogues has always excelled at.

I love playing Rogues almost on daily basis since season 1. you just connect you NEAR wallet with nft and start enjoying quests, gathering resourses, crafting, chatting and a lot more. we need more of that on NEAR tbh.

I had never heard of NEAR until Rogues partnered with them and launched NFTs on their chain. I have now made multiple NEAR wallets and I enjoy the convenient naming wallet feature a LOT.

I try to play World of Rogues daily on my computer, but it’s difficult for me to make time A launch on mobile will be perfect - I always have my phone on me. And I have a healthy number of NEAR Foxys to play with!

If it weren’t for Rogues launching on NEAR, i never would have been able to buy and collect so many unique Foxy NFTs that I need in the game. I was missing a lot in my collection, so I check daily to get deals on the NFTs I want to buy and add to my collection.

I play Rogues on a regular basis and even more when mobile goes live this year. I had never heard of the Near chain until Rogue had their mint and game integration. I created a near wallet specifically for my Near foxes. I have bought quite a few Near foxes over time.

The game is very easy to log in with your Near wallet. Select your favorite fox and play. Collect resources, craft items, complete quests as a community. Weekend fishing tournaments are a lot of fun. Can’t wait to see what is next.

It was a surprise to know that the grant has been paused even after it was approved which I would think it was due to the DAO doing research but apparently there was no research made.

I just want to express how Rogues Studio and one of its games World of Rogues lead me to know about NEAR Protocol as before I had 0 knowledge about it.

I’ve seen many people come from the ETH and Polygon ecosystems to NEAR thanks to the cool looking NFTs made by Rogues Studio and of course its game WoR that uses the NEAR blockchain.

NEAR has a huge potential to become big in the web 3 gaming space, all it needs is to support more the small teams building unique games instead of just doing cookie cutters.

I know Rogues Studio has the capacity to overcome this issue as for what I and the rest of the Rogues and NEAR community knows that there is NO other game that is as fun, unique and has the potential to bring MILLIONS of people / gamers into using the NEAR blockchain without them even noticing it which is VERY important for web 3 games to do instead of putting a barrier to entry to those who don’t even know what the blockchain is.

I hope that mistakes like this not happen again and that next time research is well done before approving a grant.

hey, This is one of the few games that I play every day, I am an older player and the game captivated me with its atmosphere, unique graphics, relaxed atmosphere and gameplay. It’s definitely worth getting involved in this project!

I am sorry to hear about the grant being paused. I have been with the Rogues community for a while. When they expanded to NEAR, I had never heard of it. I loaded up some funds and started browsing the protocol to see what it was all about. Without Rogues, I never would have given NEAR a chance. I hope Gaming DAO is able to see the value and commitment Rogues has brought to the NEAR community and reactivate the grant.
