INTRODUCTION

Being a DAO version of a creative studio that’s also a micro publishing house that intends to use web3 to optimize how new and indie authors publish their books, we have to be creative and experiment with the technologies we can put our hands on.

Everything around us in this ecosystem — and on web3 as a whole — is new, so much of what we do is on a trial and error basis. Actually, we’ve been working this way since our inception years ago, and, so far, it’s working well.

But now we have new challenges, especially how we can connect printed books with their NFT versions and do the phygital. Over the next weeks we intend to have talks with other people from DAOs that’s also trying to do that — not necessarily with books, but that are experimenting ways to bridge this gap between material and virtual worlds. In our case, to do this, we need to have books.

(We’re currently searching how to implement unlockable content on our Mintbase store, so we can make the book fully available only after purchase).

OBJECTIVES

Make small print runs of three previously published titles: two books and a chapbook. The former are our first two non-handcrafted books, and the latter was the inception of our publishing services — even before our founder @bagadefente knew it.

Besides the interesting texts, attractive visuals and other artistic qualities, we chose these titles because they are small books with low print value per copy (from 1 to 3 USD each), what will allow us to test royalties payouts as much as sales and giveaways using Mintbase’s redeem feature, airdrops and other distribution ways we’re still figuring out.

This is also the first step to make most of our previous catalog gradually available as NFT on the Near blockchain, and we will try to use our press office to bring more visibility to this. Here’s a brief description of each title:

MATHILDA OPHIS - VOL. 1

Our first “printed by a company” book is the self-published debut book by Julie Guerrini. A 72-page illustrated poetic prose edited and published in 2019 by @bagadefente before NADA really turned into a publishing house, more like an experiment with a closer writer. It was only released on-demand, also to experiment with this then-new technology.

SERPENTÁRIO

The second title is also our second non-handcrafted publication, a book by the journalist Sérgio Santa Rosa, his first poetry collection after a previous non-fiction book. Also a 72-page illustrated book published at the end of 2019, but in a 100 copies print run, it’s sold-out since mid-2020.

TOSCOLAND

This was the very first publication of @bagadefente, a 28-page (kind of) experimental comic written and illustrated back in 2006. Since then it had 03 different editions, all handcrafted, with the last published in 2017, an homemade chapbook edition of 50, also sold-out.

TIMELINE

As this is a directly budget-related project, we are working with days, not dates
10 days
— Book adjustments for reprint
— Files sending to print company
— NFT minting

15 days
— Print runs delivery
— NFT available to sale

BUDGET

All titles will have a print run of 25 copies each. Below you can see a screenshot of the online print company with the value in Brazilian Real (BRL), with rounded values for better understanding (a strict calculation will result in almost 180 usd, but we will use our own funds to complement, if necessary).

TOTAL BUDGET = 170 usd in DAI

DELIVERIES AND BENEFITS

  • Minting 03 new NFT books on Mintbase
  • Start to do tests about physical books and NFTs relationships (as a way to control sales, distribute royalties, etc.)
  • Possibility to grab media attention to Near and Mintbase with the support of NADA’s Press office, offering the NFT books minting as agenda to book and editorial market related vehicles

Feel free to ask if you have any doubts.
