NEAR x Volunteer Computing

In its sharding plan, NEAR will deploy ‘Dynamic Resharding’ at the end of 2022. The idea that the number of shards can evolve dynamically, depending on the utilisation rate of the network.

I would like to suggest an alternative. Would that be possible to re direct validators’ unused processing power to volunteer computing? Like BOINC and / or Folding@home.

Moreover, is there any value at the intersection of volunteer computing and smart contracts? Like Gridcoin but embbeded at a smart contract level?

Sharing some thoughts.

Love this idea! Not sure about the tech/implementation details, but generally like the idea of directing unused computing to public good projects like folding@home.
