Mothering august {proposal}

  1. MOTHERING {PROPOSAL}

Goal:
Real change can only emerge from the exercise of imagining a different world. “Mothering” is an invitation to dream, negotiate and expand the horizons of the possible. We aim to address the institutional and systemic constraints of motherhood, so we can look at mothering in its full potential.
Mothering is an exhibition and ongoing project, draws on collectivity and creativity as paths towards improving life in our community and beyond, as such we have reached out to partners and collaborators from multiple fields, beyond the visual arts, to participate in the public programme (dance, behaviour science, lactation) and publication (literature).

This is a 55SP projetc in partnership with Kupfer Project and will take place

MATERNAL FANTASIES is an interdisciplinary group of international artists and cultural producers based in Berlin. They shape the discourse on motherhood through collective artistic processes while enhancing the visibility of contemporary feminist positions addressing motherhood(s) in the arts. From writing autobiographical responses to classic feminist texts to devising performances using children’s games, their art practice favours inclusive community-oriented experiments as alternatives to traditional structures of art production. Bridging theory and practice, their strategy transforms research on motherhood(s), care work and representation in the arts into frameworks for immersive modes of critique.
Current members of MATERNAL FANTASIES are Aino El Solh, Hanne Klaas, Isabell Spengler, Lena Chen, Magdalena Kallenberger, Maicyra Leao, Mikala Hyldig Dal.
MATERNAL FANTASIES are recipients of the Artist Advancement Award 2019/20 of the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung.

Performance Jardim de Ere

In January 2021, Bárbara Milano invited Mônica Ventura to collaborate on her first solo exhibition, entitled Maternagem, at Oficina Cultural Alfredo Volpi, in the Itaquera neighborhood, East Zone of São Paulo.
Together, they thought of an installation that expanded into an action: Jardim pra Erê.

The premise that surrounds Jardim pra Erê is the creation of a children’s environment, created from the maternal point of view. Monica and Bárbara bring from their memories, the experiences and elements commonly used in children’s parties. Colors, sweets, toys, balloons…
A scene that waits to be inhabited and a poem in the center, made of embroidered letters in colorful colors on a yellow satin band: AMOR DE VENTRE, NAO NASCE POIS SENTE. * *Belly love, before born already felt

The poem seeks to represent some of the feelings experienced by women during pregnancy, where it is even possible to feel fear of death. And in fact, many mothers, for various reasons, die before or shortly after childbirth; there are also many cases of abortions, spontaneous or not. There is a non-recognition of these griefs. And these are also motherhood experiences.

So, Jardim pra Erê is a tribute to this feeling that is present even before being. An idea of profound motherhood, which rips the chronology of time.

On the opening day, as part of the installation, the action was celebrated, where a children’s party table received guests and at the end everyone was presented with a biodegradable latex balloon that contained a seed inside. And all together, they released the balloons painting the sky with colored dots that later, when returning to the ground, would germinate sprouts of new life.

So we invite everyone to be with us again at this party, on September 9, 2022, at 15:00, release seed balloons for fertile land to inhabit.
