Project 2: South East Asia - Web3 Roadshow

While wrapping up the third season of Monsoon Sessions & producing the NEAR / CreativesDAO YouTube episode, we continued our primary mission of creating global awareness for CreativesDAO and NEAR.

Alongside Vandal @DaoRecords, the concept of the South East Asia Web3 Roadshow was to test the waters in a particular region, laying the groundwork to accumulate a growing, long-term community, and produce future, high-profile events in the area. This was to be accomplished through several web3 meetups, in Kuala Lumpur, Koh Phangan and Bangkok. While SEA grew up in Singapore (15 years), this region is Vandal’s specialty, as he’s been residing out of Kuala Lumpur for around two decades.

The series brought us to present 3 different events across Malaysia and Thailand. Two were more “formal” tech meetup / presentations, hosted at creative, music-oriented venues. The middle event in Koh Phangan was more intimate, in a hands-on workshop based around NEAR technology - including wallets and minting NFTs on Mintbase - to the half dozen attendees.

Show 1: Wed. Sept. 20 @ fono, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Approximately 25-30 people were in attendance for the opening night, with a mix of artists, programmers, founders (including a surprise visit from Meteor Wallet) and general cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Presenters included DAO Records, GLOA, Filecoin (future of web hosting), and Meteor. Post-knowledge music was supplied by Abstract Nature - a duo performing on Roland SP-404 MKIIs.

Show 2: Sat. Sept. 24 @ Bambu Jungle, Koh Phangan, Thailand

This was a bonus show, in between the two big city gigs - not originally part of the GLOA proposal. We hosted an intimate, 3-hour workshop related to setting up NEAR wallets, generating AI artwork/videos, and then minting the final piece as an NFT on Mintbase. Of all the 4 GLOA projects and sub-events, this was the most engaging interaction, due to its hands-on appeal and personally guiding guests through the various web3 processes. Attendees were patient and committed, beaming with satisfaction following its close. In the evening, Vandal & SEA took turns DJing to Bambu’s dinner crowd.

Show 3: Wed. Sept. 27 @ Speakerbox, Bangkok, Thailand

The mini-tour wrapped up at Speakerbox BKK, where around a dozen guests attended. The evening included the most solid presentations and best vibe of the roadshow, with Sea delivering a deep talk covering the future of web hosting, a deeper dive into NEAR / CreativesDAO, and the benefits/opportunities of web3 for artists. Post-knowledge music came from legendary DJ Sticky Keyss, with a spontaneous appearance by a Space Cowboy, who brought a rack of modular synths!

Financial Report

Budget allocated: USD 1200
Actual spend: USD 1089

Wallets Onboarded

Confirmed the creation of 11 wallets related to our South East Asia efforts. We had no means of tracking wallet signups from the guests in attendance. For instance, during Meteor Wallet’s demonstration at the KL meetup, we noticed several guests signing up, but we had no way of attribution. The most effective means of onboarding and platform interaction was through workshops, where attendees HAD to setup NEAR wallets to proceed.

In the same time period, SEA conducted an online NFT minting workshop for AWHI World (https://awhiworld.com), based in Whangarei (near Auckland), New Zealand. The platform used was Mintbase, and NEAR wallet signups were demonstrated and required. We don’t know how many students/guests signed up wallets as part of the process. The organiser estimated “20 people”, noting that, “These are like new “user” markets that don’t necessarily use or understand Web3, so there is a learning curve.”

Reach & Visibility

Instagram accounts reached: 2593+
Total views: 5,000+

These were compiled from Instagram Insights data, covering the three pre-show promo posts (2 of which were more elaborately-produced generative AI videos), and the human-produced recap videos.

Final Thoughts for GLOA x CDAO Project 2

This was successful as a reach-building exercise, for GLOA, DAO Records, CreativesDAO, NEAR, and others. Attendance was higher at the KL event, thanks to this being Vandal’s home territory, that reminded some lessons about considering additional marketing/PR approaches when entering a new city / market (e.g. Bangkok). Also, additional leeway time between announcing and hosting the events, would have been more effective.

Web3 Roadshow was useful in building and strengthening relationships in South East Asia, uncovering future participants, venues, artists, speakers, sponsors, and more. The tour helped rally interest in blockchain and breakthrough solutions for artist & entrepreneurs. The world class artistry and professional tech scene in Bangkok was particularly impressive. The tentative plan is to return to Thailand in April/May, further blossom new connections by popping up various live shows and workshops, with the mindset of potentially returning in September to produce several arts-tech festival weeks, similar to Robots & Animals.

With a new NFT ticketing available to demo during the April/May visit, and exploring means of enticing NFT ticket holders to interact more with the platform via community posts, polls, exclusive media, online streams and messaging, this should directly translate to more and higher quality NEAR wallet signups. Wallets that interact and engage with functionality only available through this NFT token-gating into VR/online worlds, plus some degree of retention: Interacting with wallet for pre-event content and live streams, usage to check in at the event and possibly interact within it, and then to claim any post-event media and rewards.
