Overview
Hi all! My name is Matt and I am one of the CoFounders of FactoryDAO. We are here to present: OFF/GRID.
OFF/GRID is an experiment in autonomy & collective intelligence.
OFF/GRID pops up as a side event at curated global Crypto Conferences, creating a unique real world DAO experience.
Our goal is to learn & share our ideas and practices from across the DAO and cryptospace and engage in deep critical discussion & collaboration on how to drive the DAO space forward. We learn together during the day, and then we party together at night.
OFF/GRID is a critical space, where we experience DAOs as they should be. Where Hackathons concern themselves with code, this is a DAOathon and is focused on ideation and creativity. This no-code-required event opens it up to all aspects of your community, including communitarians, artists, writers, philosophers, and more. DAOs are going to need everyone, not just the technically minded.
A curated whitelist of 40- 60 participants (venue dependent) is invited to go OFF/GRID with a wider open event in the evening. The environment is one of energy, yet comfort. All needs are taken care of for the day and night so participants can focus on engaging with the content and building connections.
OFF/GRID is the perfect space to drive forward critical thinking in DAOs, governance and emergent design and can be tailored to the real life problems and opportunities of a protocol ecosystem.
On the 7th June 2023, FactoryDAO held OFF/GRID as a side event to ETHPrague as part of Prague Blockchain Week.
What OFF/GRID brings to the NEAR Community
- Foster Governance knowledge sharing in the community
- Help the community build the best sustainable governance practices
- Enable the community to experiment live with DAOS
- Demystify DAOs
- Educate the community
- Bringing FactoryDAOs tools to the NEAR chain and community for use on the day and into the future
The Day
The day is facilitated by Dr Nick Almond. Nick is the Founder of FactoryDAO, and ex Associate Dean of Learning, Teaching and Enhancement, at the University of the Arts, London College Fashion. He has over 20 years of teaching, academic and governance design experience. Nick has been designing and building decentralised organisations for the last 10 years. Co-founders Naomi Dara Harris and Matthew Haynes, facilitate the day, alongside members of the FactoryDAO community.
The day is built with engagement in mind. It’s a meeting of minds and a live governance exercise involving the participants, facilitators and the curated key opinion leaders.
The Night
The OFF/GRID attendees welcome the other conference goers to join the fun and friendships made in the day go deep into the night and beyond. This is an opportunity to bring in a wider set of the community to learn from people who experienced the event in the day.
The goal of the OFF/GRID: Metric for success:
The Imagine DAOs competition.
All participants are encouraged to collaborate and develop DAO ideas to submit to the ImagineDAOs competition. Each participant will be able to submit one DAO idea to the competition. They can also create groups too.
Winners:
For the day, we are a DAO. During the day, there will be a range of votes to participate in.
The final vote of the day will allow the participants to vote on the peer submitted ideas in Imagine DAO’s competition.
The top ideas are voted on by the participants and prizes are distributed.
Prize Pool ($1.5k + sponsor top ups)
The competition is run as a “Quadratic Competition” meaning that the prize pot is split by quadratic vote, with first prize taking 50% of the prize pool and N places as runner up where N is decided by vote on the day.
Bringing FactoryDAO tools to the NEAR ecosystem:
Our tools are currently deployed on Ethereum, BSC, Polygon, Optimism, RSK & Avalanche.
We will port our Mint and Influence toolsj to Aurora for the event, which will enable the users to have a NEAR native experience and use all of the tools for their own DAO creation and management as and when we release.
